If you’ve just started to scrapbook, you may be wondering about the huge range of scrapbooking supplies and what is really necessary. With that much choice, it’s hard to figure out what you really need to start your kit.

NB: Your supplies are expensive and your time is precious.
Before you buy one item, we recommend you check out

But it’s not necessary to rush out and buy one of everything! We’ve chosen our top 10 ‘must have’ items that we think you will need in your kit to get started:

1. Card stock/Cover Stock

Good quality, heavy, acid-free card stock is the foundation of every scrapbook page. It comes in a range of sizes and can be purchased in multi-packs or as separate sheets. Buying card stock as a single piece can be expensive so a better deal is often to buy a bulk pack.

2. Patterned Paper

Patterned papers are lighter in weight than card stock and come in a huge range of colors. Scrapper’s use them along with the background card stock as well as for photo mats, lettering etc. The range of colours and patterns is huge and you can use just one or 2-3 on a page in a co-ordinating color range.

3. Paper Cutter

Seasoned scrappers swear by their paper trimmer/cutter! They are a lot faster to use than scissors and also a lot more precise, producing clean, professional cuts.

4. Craft Scissors

No kit is complete without a pair of medium sized, great quality scissors. Buy a high quality pair and keep them away from the kids in case they disappear forever!

5. Adhesives

Most scrappers have a personal preference when it comes to adhesives depending on their own likes and the project they are working on. There are many, many options to choose from here such as glue dots, photo tab dispensers, tape runners etc. Any one you decide on must be specifically for scrapbooking ie: acid free.

6. Journaling/Writing Pens

Choose acid free marker/journal pens to write notes on your scrapbook page. This writing is called ‘journaling’. Always choose acid free, permanent pens.

7. Templates/Stencils

Templates/Stencils are a guide for you trace your own letters, shapes etc. Either cut a shape out and stick onto the page or use a journaling pen to stencil directly on the scrapbook page.

8. Sketches/Layouts

Beginners often find they have their supplies but don’t know where to start. Sketches/layouts provide a plan for your page and kick starts your creativity. Layouts produce professional pages in no time at all and avoid that awful frustration of scrapper’s block.

9. Album(s)

Your albums store your finished pages. Most come in standard card stock sizes. As you get more advanced with your scrapping you may even want to make your own albums.

10. Sheet Protectors

These sit between each page of your finished album. They come in a range of types – gloss, matt, opaque, transparent etc – and keep your pages clean and dust free. They prevent photos from sticking to one another. Don’t skimp on this supply – your album could be ruined if you do.

Don’t go overboard when you first start scrapping – this list will get you started and you can build from there.
