Learning Activities for Your Baby’s First 6 to 12 Months

As your baby reaches 6 to 12 months old, playing becomes easy for her because her mobility progresses. She starts crawling and walking, and attempts to do some running. As mom, you must ensure, though, that she always plays for nothing. From time to time, allow her to learn while playing. It is best also if you are with her as she plays. Be patient, though. Do not expect her to learn everything in an instant. Sometimes, you have to do repetitions to make her understand what you are trying to teach her. To keep her interest also, make playing enjoyable. Below are some learning activities for your baby’s first 6 to 12 months:
Peek-a-boo makes your baby improves her attention skills. Because this game is played through hiding behind furniture or even just with your hands, you allow her to focus her attention to you as she waits until you surprise her with your appearance.
Reading books may not be physical; but, it is also a play. Try to buy books with colorful, hard pages. Read her stories, while changing your voices for each character so you will surely capture her attention. At the end, you will also be able to build her interest in reading books. Permit her to lift the pages when necessary.
Sing nursery rhymes together. If she can’t sing yet, make sure that she’s clearly hearing every line. You may be surprised, one day she will try to speak the words she used to hear from you. Create steps or movements for each children song; ask her to copy them.
Play doll with her. Teach her how to dress it. Ask her to pick which dress she would like for her doll. She may not realize yet what you are trying to say, but by continuously doing this, time will come that she will get used to what you are doing; hence, she will come to a point of imitating your activity.
Play shape sorter. Do shape sorting first, while telling your child how to do it. Do this continuously. Then give her one shape to work on. Point to her where to place it. Do this in repetition. This activity introduces her to different shapes.
Have fun with a small and soft ball. Throw the ball and direct him toward picking up the soft ball and giving it back to you. In this way, her mobility is further developed, while teaching her to understand instructions.
Mothers should always spend time with their children, especially when they are in their growing up years. Moms should likewise understand that playing is not just playing—it is actually developing special bond with their children and improving their skills to identify things, make different movements, understand instructions, and learn the rules of the games. Therefore, as a mom, you should realize that playing with your child should also be taken as a responsibility—or better, a joyful responsibility.

How Children Learn Through Play
Children learn through play far better than they do in other forms. There are several reasons for this. At the heart of it is their desire to learn. When learning is not so much work but is fun, children are more willing to participate. They want to jump in and have a good time. As a parent, the more that you can teach through play, the more that your child will retain later on.
